Inspector Bradley Sands

Chairman

After many years of planning and a long tedious struggle, the Royal Bahamas Police Force Staff Association is now a reality.

The objective of the Association, as outlined in the Police Act, is to bring the notice of the Commissioner matters affecting the welfare and efficiency of officers.  Such matters may include pay, pensions, and conditions of service.  The Association’s first priority was to review overtime pay for officers, establish a Civilian Board of inquiry and enhance insurance coverage.

On Thursday, December 4, 1997, radio and television stations throughout the country broadcast live coverage from polling stations and were opened for the historic event of police officers casting secret ballots for candidates of their choice.  Prior to the elections, the stations and departments of the Force were decorated with campaign posters with all candidates outlining their respective agenda once elected.  After the closing of the various poling stations, thirty-three (33) officers were elected as follows: fourteen (14) constables, ten (10) corporals and six (6) sergeants.  There were no elections for the inspectors, as only two (2) out of the required three (3) who were needed to comprise the Inspectors’ Board nominated.

An election was later held among elected members at the Police Staff Association Headquarters and Sergeant 1180 Philip Don Wilson was elected Executive Chairman of the Association.  Mr. Wilson promised to champion the cause of all junior officers from the rank of constable to inspector throughout the length and breath of the Bahamas.

A three-day seminar for the elected members was officially opened by the Honorable David Thompson, Minister of State within the Office of the Prime Minister on February 16, 1998.  The sessions were held at the Police Training College.  The seminar concluded on February 18, 1998, with the Commissioner of Police assuring all members of his full support.

On Thursday, February 19, 1997, at about 4:00 pm, the members paid a courtesy call on His Excellency the Governor General, Sir Orville Turnquest.
