MORE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

During the 1960’s, significant changes took place in The Bahamas as well as in the Police Force.  In July 1964, the first major constitutional revisions since 1929 were made.  During the year, The Bahamas was also allowed self-government.  This resulted in the abolishment of the post of Colonial Secretary.  All reports of the establishment, strength and other activities of the Force were submitted by the Commissioner of Police to the Colonial Secretary, who was responsible for informing His Excellency the Governor and the Honorable House of Assembly.  The position of Chief Secretary was introduced, and few years later, a Minister assumed direct responsibility for the police when the former position was abolished.
