HOW CAN I LOOK AFTER MY HOME?

In three out of ten Burglaries, thieves do not force themselves in.  They simply enter through open windows or doors.  This can be avoided first and foremost by always locking outside doors.  Deadlocks give added security, since burglars cannot open them even from the inside.  This forces them to consider a way out once they have committed their crime.  It also restricts the size and quantity of property they can take without much effort.  Locked windows make a criminal’s job even more difficult as having to break a pane of glass to effect entry could attract unwanted attention.  In addition, getting in and out through a broken window presents an added risk of injury to the burglar.  If you live in a high risk area, consider installing bars on doors and windows and trim any tall hedges and bushes surrounding your property to reduce the chances of being burgled. You should also consider the advantages of forming a neighborhood watch in your area.

In the event that you experience a burglary or breaking, try not to touch anything and notify the police immediately by calling your local area station.  If you have critical information regarding the burglar and there is a continued safety threat, call 919 or 911 immediately!
